- Chapter 165 Town Assembly
”What the h.e.l.l are they waiting for…”
Looking around, I could see most of the representatives of the major powers of the city already gathered in the conference hall. While the town a.s.sembly building was located on the outskirts of the city, it wasn’t such a big distance to serve as an excuse for being late! The prime time of the year for our city will start in just three hours, yet they dare to keep us waiting here! What a disgrace!
“We should start without…”
“WAIT!”
Just as I was going to announce the start of the session, I heard a shout coming from the lobby, before a small group of six people burst into the hall.
“Sorry for being late, some matters came up.”
Oh, come on! No matter how beautiful or influential you are, you should try to keep my dignity in mind! Don’t you know that disrespecting the law of the city by being late like that puts me on the spot? You know I should forbid you from taking part in the a.s.sembly now?
“Just take your places already!”
With a hint of anger clearly hearable in my voice, I point at the empty spot in the tribune. While I would love to start without them, that would undermine my attempts to keep them tied close to the city faction!
Taking a look to the side, I notice that lord Katenari is still absent from his lodge. As the only patriarch of the three families that actually resides in our town, he could influence every meeting he attends to… only if he bothered to actually attend!
“Since everyone is here, let’s begin. At first, I would like to confirm that our usual set of cla.s.sification methods will be used in this tournament as well. Any objections?”
While the answer to this question is always the same, I’m compelled to ask it nevertheless. Looking back at history, there were times where some sects voted for a change in the procedures. While no such event happened during my reign over the city, I still had to ask it.
With no voices raised for a quite a while, I breathed with relief and continued.
“As for the allocation of slots to the sets, do are there any changes?”
“Heavenly sword sect wants to give three slots!”
“Flying crane sect wants to give away seven slots!”
…
…
That reaction was to be expected. With the limited number of spots for the new disciples every year, if a sect managed to scout someone beforehand, they were unable to bring in as many disciples directly from the tournament.
“G.o.dly sabre sect wants to give all of our spots!!”
At this moment, even I was surprised. To find twenty disciples worthy of joining G.o.dly grade sect was truly uncommon. One could see it just by comparing them to their rival, heavenly sword sect!
While everyone was shouting their claims, I could just sit calmly, leaving all the work to my secretary. As a management body for the tournament, city hall was responsible for allocating the top rankers of the tournament to the various sects according to their number of free spots and grade of the sect. But that wasn’t as important as another aspect.
BETTING!
The main source of income for the city in the upcoming week, able to reach higher numbers in the clearing that the household tax was the betting alone! With so many visitors and a gambling fever that took over most of the city inhabitants, the treasury would be filled to the brim!
People thought that the tournament was all about young cultivator presenting their capabilities and fighting for enrollment in the sects… But in reality, all that mattered was the money that this event would bring!
*******
Sitting down on the bed brought a sense of comfort to me. With so many events happening one after the other in such a short amount of time, I was already nearing the limits of my endurance! I know, I know. Physically, I could keep going for days like that, but my brain capabilities to process everything that was going on was already sapped.
“Here, grab a few.”
With only the grand opening left for the day, I could freely say that I was free to do whatever I wanted with the remaining time, but that wasn’t the case for Eve. As a partic.i.p.ant in the tournament, she was supposed to take part in the inauguration, even if only as a part of the crowd presented to the citizens. While it doesn’t sound as much, she was going to stay for quite a long while, while I would be able to comfortably watch the show from the tribunes.
Throwing her a few stones to help her replenish her internal energy was the least I could do!
“What are you plotting with this devious smile?”
Absorbing the energy as soon as the spirit stones reached her hand, Eve looked at me with a face filled with curiosity.
Was it just plainly visible? Dang it! I need to work on controlling my facial expression when I’m relaxing! Who knows when someone will be observing me covertly!
“Nothing much. Just realised that if we will be able to win Venna’s favour, I might be able to come up with a rather funny way to stir up some troubles for our dear families!”
Laughing dryly, I turn my face away from Eve’s watchful eyes. While the idea I have in my mind is indeed sinister, there is no point in revealing it now. In the end, without the support of the friendly faction withing Bakari house, I won’t be able to do s.h.i.+t.
“Other than that, would you mind telling me a bit about your family? Even if they won’t spot you during the grand opening, they are bound to realise that you are taking part in the tournament as soon as your first challenge will start. From what I heard, we are registering with our full names not only because of some silly paperwork but also because every challenger gets announced!”
“Well, that actually might be the case. I guess I won’t be able to avoid this topic anymore. Let me tell you why I don’t want those f.u.c.kers to interfere with my life.”
With an expression that I never saw on her face so far, Eve turned gloomy and sat beside me. I guess its finally the time when I will be able to put my five cents to pummel those b.a.s.t.a.r.ds while knowing what they did to my beloved!
Sitting on the bed, I had Eve’s head on my lap as she recounted what I know about her past so far. I wondered quite a bit how come she hails from influential family if so far I only knew about her adventures with her father, but it started to make sense with just one sentence.
“My father was the most talented man of the entire clan.”
With my hand brus.h.i.+ng Eve’s hair in slow and steady movements, I could see her chest lifting up and falling down in a slightly unsteady manner.
“As long as he was on the very top of the food chain, there weren’t any problems with the demands from our ancestors and ‘uncles’, but the moment his brother managed to reach immortal stage with the pills that our clan exchanged most of its fortune for, position of my branch of the bloodline started to slowly dimmish.”
By bringing up the matter of bloodlines and using external resources to raise one’s cultivation, Eve already hinted me what was the entire story about. While I would like to cut to the chase and ask the question that popped up in my head as soon as I heard about this approach to cultivation, I decided to wait for her to say everything herself, instead of jumping into conclusions. In the end, I hoped my premonition was wrong, and bringing it up if it wasn’t the case would only sour the mood of my beloved even more.
“The real problems started when my mother died, just when I reached my fifth birthday. So far, we could count on the support of Manneria clan to prevail through the power struggle in our clan… Sadly, her family was ranked way higher than ours, making them ditch us away as soon as the marriage was over. With that, my free-willed father who refused to be used as an a.s.set to the clan lost his only advantage over my uncle and was forced to escape from the clan clutches.”
As we approached this part of the story, I could see Eve’s const.i.tution worsening with every word. It was clear that we were reaching the part most unpleasant to her. With no better idea of how I could alleviate some of the burned of these memories from her, I grabbed her hand with my own and tightened my grip on it.
“To this day, I don’t know how, but my father managed to raise his cultivation in a span of a single year from the upper realm to the immortal one. Just when I thought that our life would finally be calm, we were attacked by those b.a.s.t.a.r.ds, my father got killed in a fight and well… you know the rest of the story.”
Unable to bear the weight of those emotions, Eve lifted herself up a bit and hugged herself into my upper body. Closing her in my embrace, I made sure to not stop brus.h.i.+ng her hair even for a moment, trying to calm down the delicate shaking that was transmitted to me as she sobbed.
I had no heart to ask her anything else about her family problem. It was plainly obvious why they sought her. With the outstanding growth of her father, they were probably sure that she held some information about how he achieved it. This kind of information was priceless for a clan that wanted to ascend into new heights, especially if the most powerful expert grew his strength only thanks to medicinal pills!
“Bloodline merging?”
While I don’t want to put even more pressure on her, this is the question I have to ask. This match of the words is a phrase I found all the way back in one of the books that I read while living in the bas.e.m.e.nt of my family. Even if the phrase sounded complicated, it basically meant forcing two parties that were believed to possess great talent to make a child together, so that the overall strength of the offspring would be even greater than the one of their parents.
Historically, that wasn’t a bad idea. Most of the clans and sect often had only one or two prodigies in their lands, making them a great pair for each other, because only this small group could share the troubles of cultivating new heights. But with the spreading of the talent all over the world, this process became something that clan not suggested, but enforced of their more talented parts, stealing the love and affection from their lives.
Treaded as nothing else but a breeding cattle, it was obvious that with as free-willed cultivators were, no one would willingly accept such a thing! Especially when I was the one whose lover was looked at through the prism of this perspective!
With my hand involuntarily tightening into a fist, I accidentally pulled on Eve’s hair, forcing her to slightly moan in pain.
“Ah, sorry. But I guess that explains your previous drive to get pregnant, am I wrong?”
If I were to make a child with her, no matter what this clan would do, their plans towards her would be foiled. While it wasn’t much, as long as the parents didn’t change or grew cultivation-wise, the firstborn would always be the most talented one. Even with insane amounts of resources placed in researching this phenomenon, no one yet could understand why it occurred, so people just accepted it as common sense.
Just by making her first child with me, her worth for her clan would instantly dimmish. No matter how bad does it sound, this was the only way to avoid direct confrontation with her clan. But since when I am someone who hides away from those who cross my bottom line?
“Yes, I’m sorry for not telling you before. It wasn’t fair of me to force you into that situation.”
Pus.h.i.+ng her head even deeper in my chest, Eve trembling only worsened as if she was scared of my potential reaction.
Who does she take me for? I’m here to be her support, so if she judged it to be the best way to go with things, I would pin her down and filled her with my seed for as long as it would take her for the child to be finally conceived! While I’ have enough resolve to go with her idea, my earthy way of thinking is waaay to rebellious to allow her to fall so low as to avoid the confrontation if there is any way around it!
Pus.h.i.+ng her at the legs of my arms, I saw her teary, messy face and uncertainty seeping from her eyes.
“Do you have anyone in your clan that you still have any sympathy for?”
Ignoring the sharp pain in my heart steeming from the fear and anxiety of her face and my decision to put it aside for now, I asked this question seemingly out of nowhere.
“What? Why you are asking this?”
Unable to comprehend the meaning behind my words, her expression turned from teary to a puzzled one.
With my inner feelings of rage and hate surfacing on my face, I uttered those words while trying my best to not scare her with my sentence alone.
“Because I will make sure to kill every single one of those b.a.s.t.a.r.ds, so I want to know who should I spare.”
